Radium isotopes to investigate the water mass pathways on the Kerguelen Plateau (Southern Ocean)

چکیده
Natural iron fertilization promotes the phytoplankton bloom that takes place on the Kerguelen Plateau in the Indian sector of the Southern Ocean. We measured Ra (T1/2 1⁄4 5.75 yr) and Ra (T1/2 1⁄4 1602 yr) in waters above the Kerguelen Plateau in order to provide information on the water-mass pathways, which in turn could help elucidate the mechanisms controlling iron fertilization in that area. Ra activities are extremely low in this region, being in most cases o0.15 dpm/100 kg (o2.5 10 18 g/kg). Station A3 (520m depth), located on the plateau in the middle of the bloom area, also displays such low values but with higher Ra activities (and higher Ra/Ra ratios) in the upper 150m. Such a pattern suggests the presence of a water mass that recently interacted with sediments and therefore has been advected onto the Kerguelen Plateau. Elevated Ra activities were found in shallow waters in the vicinity of Heard Island, south of the Kerguelen Plateau. Contact of the water masses with the shallow lithogenic sediments likely explains these high Ra activities. When combined with physical observations, these results suggest that the water mass advected onto the plateau originates from the south of the Kerguelen Plateau. This northward advection might represent a supply of dissolved and/or particulate Fe for the observed phytoplankton bloom. Using the Ra profile obtained at station A3, we could estimate the vertical eddy diffusivity (Kz) on the Kerguelen Plateau. Our Kz estimate (1.5 10 71.3 10 m/s) compares well with that reported by Park et al. [2008a. Internal tides and vertical mixing over the Kerguelen Plateau. Deep-Sea Research II, doi:10.1016/j.dsr2.2007.12.027] based on CTD/LADCP data. By combining this Kz estimate with the gradient of dissolved Fe observed at A3 [Blain, S., Sarthou, G., Laan, P., 2008. Distribution of dissolved iron during the natural iron fertilization experiment KEOPS (Kerguelen Plateau, Southern Ocean). Deep-Sea Research II, doi:10.1016/j.dsr2.2007.12.028], we calculate a vertical Fe flux of 1.0–14.3 nmol/m d. r 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Origin and evolution of a submarine large igneous province: the Kerguelen Plateau and Broken Ridge, southern Indian Ocean
Oceanic plateaus form by mantle processes distinct from those forming oceanic crust at divergent plate boundaries. Eleven drillsites into igneous basement of Kerguelen Plateau and Broken Ridge, including seven from the recent Ocean Drilling Program Leg 183 (1998^99) and four from Legs 119 and 120 (1987^88), show that the dominant rocks are basalts with geochemical characteristics distinct from ...
متن کاملPathways of the Agulhas waters poleward of 298S
Passive tracers are advected in a Southern Ocean State Estimate (SOSE) to map the pathways of Agulhas waters, with a focus on determining where the Agulhas waters intrude into the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC). Results show that Agulhas waters spread into all three ocean basins within 3 years of release. After leaving the African continent, the mean Agulhas water pathway tilts northwest t...
متن کاملNitrogen cycling in the Southern Ocean Kerguelen Plateau area: evidence for significant surface nitrification from nitrate isotopic compositions
This paper presents whole water column data for nitrate N, O isotopic composition for the Kerguelen Plateau area and the basin extending east of Heard Island, aiming at understanding the N-cycling in this naturally iron fertilized area that is characterized by large re-current phytoplankton blooms. The KEOPS 2 expedition (October– November 2011) took place in spring season and complements knowl...
متن کاملA tale of three islands: Downstream natural iron fertilization in the Southern Ocean
Iron limitation of primary productivity prevails across much of the Southern Ocean but there are exceptions; in particular, the phytoplankton blooms associated with the Kerguelen Plateau, Crozet Islands, and South Georgia. These blooms occur annually, fertilized by iron and nutrient-rich shelf waters that are transported downstream from the islands. Here we use a high-resolution (1/128) ocean g...
متن کاملImprint of a dissolved cobalt basaltic source on the Kerguelen Plateau
Processes of cobalt (Co) entrainment from shelf sediments over the Kerguelen Plateau were studied during the KEOPS (Kerguelen Ocean Plateau compared Study) in order to explain the exceptionally high dissolved cobalt concentrations that have been measured in the surface waters above the Kerguelen Plateau, and in intermediate and deep waters above its eastern slope. Lateral advection and dissolut...
